Every family that is referred to the CAC is assigned a Family Advocate who serves as their primary point of contact and support person as they navigate the multiple systems and agencies involved in protecting children. The Family Advocate begins by meeting with caregivers during the child’s interview to address concerns, answer questions, and discuss any needed support moving forward. They assist with completing referrals for evidence-based mental health services for both the child and the caregivers, as well as referrals for any other needed community resources. Family Advocates accompany families to court, providing support and assisting in obtaining orders of protection. Family Advocates also provide information about victim’s rights and the Victim Compensation program.
In the months after the interview, the Family Advocate continues to follow up with caregivers to provide updates about the investigation, ensure engagement in services, and continually support families on the path to hope and healing. If the case proceeds to court, families are also assigned a Victim Witness Advocate (VWA) through the District Attorney’s Office. The VWA updates the family on court proceedings and assists with trial preparation. However, the CAC Family Advocate remains available to families at any point in time.
